People on the autism spectrum present a wide range of both physical and mental abilities, we understand this and create truly individualized programing. This is done through the use of our Personalized Exercise Plans. The Personalized Exercise Plan is formulated after a series of both formal and informal assessments. Designed to mirror the Individualized Education Program, utilized in special education, the PEP as a collection of benchmark goals and objectives, that are specific, time bound and measurable. The personal trainers at Adaptive Exercise can then follow this blueprint using various ABA strategies to help your child reach their fitness goals.

Providing our personal training in-home, allows our clients to feel comfortable while beginning their exercise programming. Many of our clients come to us with little to no prior experience engaging in regular physical activity or exercise. Beginning this journey within the traditional big box gym could be overwhelming or unsafe. These gyms can be loud and crowded, not exactly the ideal sensory environment for person with autism. Gyms can also be very unsafe when individuals do not know how to take the proper precautions or how to use the equipment safely. The personal training provided by our trainers is much different than the training conducted in big box gyms. Much of our training are ABA strategies, special education strategies and added supports. This form of specialized personal training may not always be appropriate in a traditional big box gym. But, at Adaptive Exercise we provide our personal training in the comfort of your own home. Many ABA therapy companies provide in-home services to teach life skills, so why not teach the life skills of exercise in-home as well. Because our equipment is carefully selected with safety and affordability in mind, your child can learn a wide array of functional movements in their own home. This equipment can then he purchased by families to continue their exercise programming outside of structured personal training sessions. Much of our equipment is sand based, which is far less likely to cause injury then metal weights. Other pieces of equipment are plastic or rubber, which if utilized properly under supervision are very safe.

Some people may think that using this type of adaptive equipment is limited in what the personal trainer can teach and how far the client can progress through an exercise program. This could not be further from the truth. Other pieces of equipment like resistance bands to be used to teach a variety of different exercises that more complex machines focus on in gyms. Some of the adaptive equipment we use our training is meant so late to support athletes in learning exercises. In all of my years I have not seen any of this type of equipment available in gyms.
